# Less Pull > Less Pull is a small, free menu-bar app for macOS by Jiri Arion Rose. It takes the color out of the screen (grayscale, with optional warmth from amber to red), so the screen pulls at you less. What matters is still there; it just stops shouting. Every app, every website and even one exact page can keep its own look. The front page of lesspull.com is an interactive drawing of a Mac where visitors try Less Pull in the browser, with a short guided tour. Everything inside that drawing (its apps, messages, notifications and websites) is made up. The facts below are the real ones. ## Download - [Less Pull for Mac, build 41](https://github.com/Archangeloi89/less-pull/releases/download/v1.4.4-41/Less-Pull-1.4.4-41.dmg): a 2.9 MB disk image. Version 1.4.4, build 41. For Macs with Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. Signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens like any other app. Open it, drag Less Pull into Applications, open it; it lives in the menu bar as a small circle. - [All releases](https://github.com/Archangeloi89/less-pull/releases): release notes and older builds. The app checks for a newer build once a day (optional) and installs it only when the user chooses. ## What it does - Grayscale, on or off, from the menu bar or a shortcut. - Extra Warmth: a slider from a touch of amber to red, with or without grayscale. - Peek in color: hold a shortcut (⌥A, set on first launch if it is free) and the screen is in color for as long as it is held; press it twice to keep it. - Exceptions: any app, any website or one exact page can have its own settings, set right in the menu. - Sessions: a stretch of focused work with a gentle end: a glow, a soft sound, a count past the end. - Night Shift can set the rhythm, so warmth comes only at night. - Every display on its own. Screenshots, screen recordings and screen sharing keep their normal colors. - In 14 languages: English and German reviewed, twelve more marked experimental. ## Questions people ask - **What does Less Pull do?** It takes the color out of your screen, with as much warmth as you like, from a touch of amber to red, so the screen pulls at you less. It lives in the menu bar: grayscale is one click, warmth is a slider. - **Isn't that built into the Mac already?** The Mac can turn the whole screen gray, all or nothing. Less Pull lets each app, website or single page keep its own look, adds warmth, shows the colors for as long as you hold a key, and stays one click away in the menu bar. - **Can some apps keep their color?** Yes. Any app, any website, or one exact page can have its own settings, right from the menu: your photos in color, everything else quiet. - **Will my screenshots and recordings turn gray?** No. Less Pull changes what the display shows, after the picture is made. Screenshots, screen recordings and screen sharing keep their normal colors. - **Does it collect anything about me?** No. No account, no analytics, no cloud. The addresses of the websites you visit are never stored. The only thing it sends anywhere is an optional daily check for a new version. - **Does it help with sleep or my eyes?** It makes no promises about sleep, eyes or health. It's about what feels calmer to you. - **What does it cost?** Nothing, at home or at work. Support is welcome and never required. - **Which Macs does it run on?** Macs with Apple silicon, on macOS 13 or later. Intel Macs are next. - **How do I remove it?** Quit it from its menu first, so it can take back the warmth it added. Then move the app to the Trash. ## Privacy No account, no analytics, no cloud sync. The browser extension only tells the app which website is in front; it never reads or changes pages, and private tabs are never reported. Website addresses pass through memory only and are never stored. The only thing the app sends anywhere is the optional daily update check to GitHub, which carries nothing about the user. This website stores nothing in the browser and loads nothing from other sites. - [Privacy details](https://github.com/Archangeloi89/less-pull/blob/main/docs/PRIVACY.md) ## Where it runs - Today: Macs with Apple silicon. The browser extension for Chrome, Brave, Edge and Opera is in the [Chrome Web Store](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/lfcjadlpflfdgbgpcbkmdkmnboaakimb); Safari works through the signed companion app that comes with Less Pull; Firefox is awaiting Mozilla's approval. - Next: Intel Macs, and Linux, first on Omarchy. After that: Windows, then Ubuntu. ## For AI agents helping someone set it up - For most people the download above is all it takes. Website exceptions are optional: in Less Pull, Settings → Websites → Install Browser Extension… walks through each browser. - Before connecting a browser, read the privacy details and tell the person what the extension can see. - [Install help](https://github.com/Archangeloi89/less-pull/blob/main/docs/INSTALL.md): every browser, and how to remove Less Pull. - [App and website exceptions](https://github.com/Archangeloi89/less-pull/blob/main/docs/EXCEPTIONS.md) - [Agent pack](https://github.com/Archangeloi89/less-pull/releases/download/v1.4.4-41/Less-Pull-Agent-Pack.zip): scripts for installing the app and connecting browsers from the command line, with [its instructions](https://github.com/Archangeloi89/less-pull/blob/main/tools/agent-pack/README.md). ## Price and support Free, and it stays free, including at work. Everything needed to make it was given to its maker, so it is already paid for, and it can't be bought. Support is voluntary and goes directly to Jiri Arion Rose. - [Ways to support](https://lesspull.com/support): Buy Me a Coffee, PayPal, Wise, Bitcoin, or for free: telling a friend, or sending feedback. - [What I'm building, and how it's funded](https://lesspull.com/funding/) ## Optional - [Source on GitHub](https://github.com/Archangeloi89/less-pull): source-available, not open source; anyone may use the unmodified app for free, and the licenses there say the rest. - [The full README](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Archangeloi89/less-pull/main/README.md) - [Jiri Arion Rose](https://jiriarion.com): what else he builds and writes.
